On future-proof hi-fi

Well, it is not easy nor obvious.

I have a couple of hundreds of CDs back home, but let's face it - CDs are so '90s. What I would like to have is a digital content source rigged to good quality D-class amp and decent speakers.

I bought PS3 in hope to use it as a source (server), but there are several drawbacks:
1. It is not exactly audiophile-grade
2. Does not support the ONLY hi-quality audio format - FLAC
3. Require a TV

My friend uses Mac Mini, but I would like to avoid Apple products as much as possible. I do not want PC neither. So what can I use? Thing like Logitech Transporter comes to mind (XLR!), but this thing has no storage! What else? There is Olive HD, but have mixed feelings about that.

The second question is - where to get HD content? There are some web stores selling HD (like this and this and this), these days even DG offers FLAC to download. And I still would have to come up with reasonable way to rip CD to FLAC (people in the know say PC-ripping is not exactly the way)

Any ideas? Thoughts? Contributions?

Blacknote DSS15, DSS15 Tube, DSS30, DSS30 Tube. And of course there's Linn Majik DS, Akurate DS and some others. But with Linn you need network storage. With Blacknote simple portable HDD will do. I have Hi-Fi Choice with the review of DSS15 and it's a very good review. DSS15 costs 1000 Euro. DSS30 and DSS30 Tube cost more, but they have XLRs. All DSSes work also as DACs. For further comments and some discussion - call me :)

Good luck with your search :)

Marek - just to get it straight - you want me to connect this Blacknote to Millenium Mk IV? Not exactly the same league... Especially that I still would have to connect external USB drive to it... OK, geeky, but not very high-end.

OTOH remember movie Pi? remember his home-made computer? That was geeky... but I also want convenience and something that would not be an eye-sore...

I just read your text, didn't bother with the links ;))
Maybe Linn Klimax DS? Not high-end enough? I won't help you - sorry ;)

Nope, Linn does not cut it - no storage of files ;-(

Besides - assuming Millenium Mark IV in the rig - no need for additional DAC.

You're right. You can survive with source with DAC, that you don't use, but if you want Millenium, you'll NEED source with digital output (no analogue inputs in Millenium), and I'm not sure Linns have it. Just read Akurate DS review some days ago and don't remember it saying anything about it. Blacknotes have digital output and T+A MP 1260 R has it, but no HDD - at least I don't see it in specs.
The search won't be easy...
As WW said: good luck ;)
BTW - are you sure about Millenium? Hmmm, impressive... ;)

I do not want analog inputs. This is why I would prefer not exactly Millenium but TacT M/S 2150 XDM or even TacT T2.

Honestly? I'd like to have time to make my own - TacT Millenium - level of DAC is available from Tact... That would be more than just remake front panel, but given time...
